Found a safe nobody can open in Torresdale? Call or text Mike at (661) 927-7473 or email info@aspiresafeandlock.com. A photo of the door and lock, plus any brand name on the safe, helps him plan the visit.
Estate safes in older homes
Torresdale is mostly single homes and twins, and some of them are among the older houses in the Northeast. Holy Family University sits on Frankford Avenue, and Torresdale station on SEPTA's Trenton Line serves the neighborhood. Glen Foerd, the historic estate on the river, sits at its northern tip.
Older homes that stay in a family for a long time are where estate safes come from. When a house is being cleared out or sold, someone opens the basement door or the back of a closet and finds a safe that's been locked for years. Sometimes it's a small fire box. Sometimes it's a heavy dial safe or a safe set into the floor.
What to expect with an estate safe
- Look for the combination first. Old combinations get written in surprising places. It's worth an hour of searching.
- Send Mike a photo. The maker's name, the lock type and the size of the safe tell him how the door is built.
- Get it opened properly. A safe that's opened through the lock, or with a small repaired drill hole, can be used again or sold. One that's been pried or cut usually can't.
- Decide what's next. Keep it with a new combination, repair the lock, or get rid of it. See combination changes.

When the house changes hands
If you've just bought a Torresdale house, you don't know who still has keys. Mike rekeys so the old keys stop working, upgrades and replaces locks, and changes the combination on any safe that came with the house. See residential locksmith.

Questions people ask
We're clearing out a parent's house and found a safe. What should we do first?
Look for the combination before calling anyone. Check desk drawers, the back of picture frames, address books, inside the safe's manual and the paperwork from the estate. If it doesn't turn up, a safe specialist can open the safe and set a new combination. See inherited safes.
There's a safe set into the basement floor. Can that be opened?
Yes. Floor safes are opened from the top like any other safe, through the lock. The hard part is usually working in a tight space, not the safe itself. Clear the area around it before the visit if you can.
