Tacony's safes are often older than their owners

Tacony grew up around the Disston saw works, and many of its rowhomes and twins date from that era. Houses that old have seen a lot of owners, and a safe is one of the things that tends to stay behind. A typical case is a heavy dial safe in a basement or closet with no combination on record.

The good news about an old dial safe: the lock is mechanical, so there's no battery to die and no circuit board to fry. When one won't open, it's usually because the combination is lost, the dial is being turned the wrong way, or the lock is worn. All of those are fixable.

Keep the dial, or go digital?

Since a lot of older safes still have their original dial locks, this question comes up a lot once the safe is open. There's no single right answer. A dial is slower to open but very reliable. A keypad is quick and lets you change the code in seconds, which helps when several people need access. Mike can repair the lock you have, or swap a dial for a keypad at the same visit.

Torresdale Avenue businesses

Torresdale Avenue is Tacony's main shopping street, and the neighborhood has its own station on SEPTA's Trenton Line. For the shops, bars and offices nearby, Mike services deposit and under-counter safes, changes codes when staff change, and handles the doors themselves: panic bars and closers, storefront locks and master key systems.

Questions people ask

My safe has a dial and nobody knows the combination. What now?

A lost combination on a dial safe is one of the most common safe calls. The safe can be opened without the numbers, and once it's open the lock can be set to a new combination you choose. See lost safe combinations.

Should I keep my old dial lock or switch to a keypad?

It depends on who uses the safe. A good dial lock can work for decades with no batteries. A keypad is faster and easier to give out and change codes on, but it needs batteries and can fail. Some people swap a dial for a keypad, and some go the other way after a keypad lets them down. See electronic safe locks.

Can you work on a store safe on Torresdale Avenue?

Yes. Deposit and drop safes, under-counter safes and the doors on the business itself are all part of Mike's work. See business safes.
