Change the key, keep the lock

Lock Rekeying in Northeast Philadelphia

Rekeying changes which key opens a lock without replacing the lock itself. Every old key stops working, and the hardware stays on the door. Mike Schiavone rekeys houses, apartments and businesses across Northeast Philly and lower Bucks.

Short answer: rekeying changes your locks so a new key works and every old key stops working. It's the usual fix after you move in, lose a key, or a tenant or employee leaves, as long as the locks themselves are in good shape. Call or text Mike at (661) 927-7473 with how many doors and locks you have.

Rekey or replace?

If the locks work fine and you just need the old keys to stop working, rekeying is usually the fit. If a lock is worn, damaged or you want something different, it gets replaced. Mike can tell you which when he sees the locks.

If you're replacing anyway, see residential locksmith for hardware upgrades and new locks.

When to rekey

Mike's customer Keith had his house rekeyed, a car key made and a safe opened, all by Mike:

★★★★★
Unbelievable locksmith! We had more than 1 problem and he fixed everything! Mike rekeyed our home, made a key for our Honda Accord, and opened our safe which we had lost the combination for! I called several locksmiths and most would just do cars. Others just rekey lock. Mike fixed all 3 at a wonderful price! I highly recommend!

Euro profile cylinders

Euro profile cylinders are common on patio and sliding doors, uPVC doors and doors with multipoint locks. They can be rekeyed like any other pin cylinder, or replaced outright when the cylinder is damaged or you want a better one. The photo at the top of this page shows a euro cylinder Mike rekeyed.

Unusual and hard-to-match locks

Not every lock is a common brand with parts that are easy to find. Older locks, odd brands and one-off hardware can take patience. William King's job was one of those:

★★★★★
Aspire Safe and Lock is a great choice. It is a full service business that can handle a problem with professional help. My situation was unique finding the right key for my lock. With a lot of patience with searching for that key, they came through to fix my problem. I highly recommend Aspire Safe and Lock. I would not hesitate to use them again.

Rekeying for businesses and rentals

For a business, rekeying is the quick answer when an employee leaves with a key. When it keeps happening, or different people need different access, a master key system gives you more control: each key opens only what it should, and one key opens everything for the owner. Landlords with several units can do the same, so each tenant's key opens their unit and the shared entrance.

What to tell Mike

  1. How many doors, and which locks are on each: knob, lever, deadbolt, euro cylinder.
  2. The brand, usually printed on the key or the face of the lock.
  3. Whether you want one key for everything.
  4. A photo of the locks and a key, if you have one. Text it to (661) 927-7473 or email it to info@aspiresafeandlock.com.

And if the safe at home has a combination that too many people know, the safe version of a rekey is a combination change.

Questions people ask

What's the difference between rekeying and replacing a lock?

Rekeying changes the lock so a new key works and old keys don't. The lock, handle and deadbolt stay. Replacing swaps the whole lock for new hardware.

Is rekeying cheaper than replacing locks?

Usually, because the existing hardware stays on the door.

Can you make all my doors work with one key?

Often, yes, depending on the locks. Mike can tell you when he sees them.

Should I rekey after moving into a new house?

It's a good idea. You can't know how many keys previous owners gave out to family, neighbors, contractors or dog walkers. Rekeying makes all of them useless.

Can you rekey a euro profile cylinder?

Yes. Mike rekeys euro profile cylinder locks.
