Liberty Gun Safe Won't Open
The keypad just beeps, it stopped after a battery change, or the dial turns and the handle won't. Liberty gun safes turn up in Mike's work regularly. Here's what's worth checking, what never to do, and what happens when the lock has failed.

Short answer: on a Liberty with a keypad, check the battery first. If that isn't it, stop. Don't spray anything into the lock, don't play with the wires and never cut the hinges. Text Mike photos of the safe and keypad at (661) 927-7473 or email info@aspiresafeandlock.com, and he'll open it and repair it so it goes back into service.
Before you call
The only checks worth making yourself are the battery (Mike recommends Duracell Procell or Energizer Industrial, dated five or more years out) and, on a dial model, dialing slowly and stopping exactly on each number. Past those, call. Mike's full list of what to check and what never to do is on what to check when a safe won't open.
When the electronic lock has failed
If the battery is good and the safe still won't open, the keypad, the wiring or the lock itself may have failed. Many gun safes, Liberty models among them, use electronic locks made by SECURAM rather than by the safe maker.
Age is a big factor. Electronic safe locks have a working life of about ten years from the manufacture date, which should be on a sticker on the lock. A Liberty bought more than ten years ago, or one whose lock has no date sticker, is due for a new lock and keypad before it locks you out. Replacing them before an emergency is much easier and cheaper than an opening. More on the electronic safe locks page.

How Mike handles a Liberty lockout
Mike works on Liberty gun safes, including Liberty handle repairs. His goal is to open the safe in the least destructive way possible, in a reasonable amount of time, and then repair it correctly with a new lock and keypad where needed, so the safe goes straight back into use.
Text clear photos of the whole safe door, the handle and the keypad or dial to (661) 927-7473 or email info@aspiresafeandlock.com, plus photos above, below and on each side of the safe. Tell him what happened, what you've already tried, and whether the safe is bolted down.

Questions people ask
Why does my Liberty safe just beep and not open?
Most failures to open are battery related. Check the battery's brand and expiration date. Mike recommends Duracell Procell or Energizer Industrial, dated at least five years out. If the battery and wires are good and it still won't open, the keypad or the lock may have failed.
The dial on my Liberty safe is stiff. Should I spray it with something?
No. Don't spray WD-40 or any lubricant into the dial or the lock. A tight or sluggish dial is a sign it needs maintenance. Book it before the lock fails.
Can you replace the lock on a Liberty safe?
Yes. After an opening, Mike repairs or replaces the failed lock, and you can choose a new electronic lock or a mechanical dial.
Does my Liberty safe have an override key?
Most safes don't have a key override, so don't count on one. If the keypad has failed, the safe needs to be opened and the lock replaced.
