Northeast Philadelphia

Safe Locksmith in Holmesburg, Philadelphia

Holmesburg shares the 19136 ZIP code with Mayfair, where Aspire Safe and Lock is based. It's one of the oldest parts of the Northeast, and old houses have a way of turning up old safes. Mike Schiavone opens them, finds lost combinations and gets locked safes working again.

Got a safe nobody can open in Holmesburg? Call or text Mike at (661) 927-7473 or email info@aspiresafeandlock.com. For an old safe, a photo of the door, the dial and any maker's name painted or cast on it is the most useful thing you can send.

An old neighborhood with old safes

Holmesburg grew up along Frankford Avenue long before the rest of the Northeast filled in. The Frankford Avenue bridge over Pennypack Creek here dates to the 1690s, and Pennypack Park runs along the neighborhood's edge. The houses are a mix of rowhomes, twins and older single homes.

Old houses mean old safes. A typical case is a dial safe in a basement that belonged to a parent or grandparent, or a safe that was already in the house when the current owner bought it. Nobody wrote the combination down, or the paper with the numbers went missing years ago.

Philadelphia made a lot of safes

The safe at the top of this page is a J. Baum safe lettered for Chas. G. Stahl and Keystone Safe and Lock Co. of Philadelphia. Mike has also worked on safes from York Safe & Lock and Herring-Hall-Marvin. If the safe in your Holmesburg basement has a maker's name on it, that name is a useful clue to the lock inside and how the door is built. The safe brands page has more on the makers that turn up around here.

Why call Mike

Old safes need a specialist who knows old locks, not a car locksmith with a drill. Mike's background is in banks, where he worked on vault doors, time locks and safe deposit boxes, some of them a century old. He is a member of the Safe & Vault Technicians Association, and Holmesburg is right next door to where he works from.

Questions people ask

I found an old safe in a Holmesburg house. Is it worth opening?

Usually, if only to find out. Old safes turn up with family papers, coins and jewelry inside, and sometimes nothing at all. Either way, a properly opened safe can be repaired and used again, and an antique one is often worth more working than scrapped. See inherited and antique safes.

Can a very old dial safe still be opened without the combination?

Yes. Age doesn't make a safe impossible. Mike opens it in the least destructive way possible, then repairs it correctly so it goes back into service. With an antique, there's no manufacturer to call for the combination.

Do you come to Holmesburg?

Yes. Holmesburg is next door to Mike's base in Mayfair.

The safe has a key lock and the key is gone. Can you help?

Often, yes. Many safe locks can be decoded or opened and a new key made, so the safe stays usable. See safe keys.
