The equipment Mike works on
Mike's background is servicing safes and vaults of all kinds, including under-counter steel and high security containers like ATMs, ECRs and TCRs. That covers most of the cash equipment in a bank branch and a good share of what sits in stores and gas stations:
- ATMs in bank lobbies, convenience stores, bars and restaurants
- Teller cash recyclers (TCRs) at the teller line
- Under-counter teller safes and lockers, often with electronic locks
ATM safes
An ATM is two machines in one cabinet. The top half holds the screen, card reader and computer. The bottom half is a safe that holds the cash cassettes. That safe has its own lock.
When that lock fails, nobody can replenish the cash or clear a jam, and the machine sits out of service. More on electronic locks at electronic safe locks.
When an ATM safe can't be opened, it's drilled and repaired correctly so it goes back into service. Mike has done exactly that for a locked-out ATM in a convenience store, opened on site.
Teller cash recyclers
A teller cash recycler sits at the teller line. It counts and stores cash, and pays it back out, so tellers aren't each working from a separate drawer. The cash is held in a safe in the lower part of the machine, behind its own door and lock.

When the safe door on a TCR won't open, the branch loses its cash at the teller line until it's fixed. Like ATM safes, these are built to stop attack, so opening and repairing one is work for a safe specialist.
Under-counter steel
Under-counter safes sit below the teller line or a store counter. Many have more than one compartment, each with its own lock, so access can be split between staff.

Mike handles failed locks and keypads and combination changes on under-counter safes. See safe combination changes.
Why this is specialist work
ATM safes, TCRs and under-counter steel are built to stop attack, so opening and repairing them is work for a safe and vault specialist. Mike's experience with this equipment comes from the banking industry, and his work includes a Diebold TL-30 safe, under-counter teller safes and teller cash recyclers.
